After spending over 8 days in Le Mans, yes, 8 awesome days unlike what every other french thinks. Booked a blablacar ride from Le Mans to Montpellier, a journey that cost me 56€ and took over 8 hours. Travelled with a young driver and her sister, as well as another guy with a cute dog. The problem is, nobody speaks english

Anyway, the ride wasn’t that bad apart from some traffic halfway, and some crazy driving when we reach the city. It might be a misunderstanding happening during the ride when the driver didnt drop me in a town before (Gignac-where its nearer to Lisa’s house). She drop all of us in Montpellier city and took us to the main station. Lisa couldnt be here so we set a meeting point with her friend in Place de la Comedie and went to her house while waiting for Lisa. It tooks over 30 minutes to get from Gignac to Montpellier.

It was great to see Lisa again after so long. We met in New Zealand, my housemate, roommates and she visited me in Malaysia couple of months ago. Cant believe I’m here now in her hometown! Her parents is very accommodating and nice but i felt bad couldnt speak French with them. Sort of a Google translator and hand sign thats makes communication possible. I've also met Claire, who was in Penang for 2 months. Really happy to see her again in France!

Ive stayed a total of 10 days in Montpellier, well, Aniane to be exact and visited quite a number of towns, villages, tourist sites and viewpoints around. We went to Pont Du Diable and St Guilhem-le-Desert on the first day, and I’m really surprised how beautiful this place is and to top it off, its one of the few Unesco site in the world! Wow! Never in my expectation that i would visit a Unesco site.
Her mom is such a great cook and was once owned a restaurant nearby. Had a feast in her house for the whole 10 days. Octopus in tomato sauce, confit de canard, desserts, bread and cheese and lots of good wine! Her dad also have a very nice garden that produces a lot of vegetables and fruits daily!
Lisa also took me to a Sete, a very nice town by the sea (it’s my first sea view since I’m arrived in Europe). Took us 1 hour to get here but worth the drive for sure! If you stay in Montpellier, it’s much nearer to get to Sete and i highly recommend that! Love the view and the city. She knows i love seafood and this is one of a good place to have a feast. Had an awesome entree and main, with a bottle of wine for 55€ for both of us. Pretty reasonable but quality wise is a let down, especially on the seafood platter where the snails had muds in it and mussels with the beard intact. Not cool for a restaurants that charged this amount of money. nevertheless, i still enjoyed the feast and had a good time.
Believe it or not, i even went to a dog show to watch Lisa and her friend to present their Whippet in the National Competition in Expo site somewhere near the Montpellier’s airport. One of the dog got a excellent cert but sadly, we didnt win any place. Strong competition as it seems like whippet is a very popular breed here. I had the chance to pet so many awesome dogs here, one of my favourite is the rough collie, bernese mountain dog and the white German Shepherd. Ive even had the chance to finally see the Irish Wolfhound, and some rare dog such as Elkhound.

Oh did i mention, the whippet found a truffle in their garden? That is such a big surprise for me as it’s always one of my dream to see, smell and eat truffle! Her friend gave it to us and we had an awesome truffle omelette for breakfast. I’ve learned that by putting truffle with eggs in a air tight container will actually flavored the eggs. Lovely breakfast with some tomatoes and mushrooms as well. That;s my kind of breakfast apart from occasional oysters :P The oysters here are pretty cheap and i could get a fresh one from supermarket for about 1€ each. During the farmers market in Aniane on Thursday morning, i managed to get 7 pcs for 4.50€! Jackpot! Oysters made my day.
This blog post is exceptionally long as i’ve explore so much of the Languedoc region thanks to Lisa and her parents. It was a great unforgettable experience in France. 10 days past and it’s time to say goodbye as i’ve booked a cheap TGV-ICE ticket back to Kaiserslautern from Paris Gare de est for 39€ on the 4th of July. Since my friend, Laurie is free from the 1st July, i’ve decided to stop by Bordeaux for 2 nights. To be continued...

Oh wait.. i don't have a bucket list but the famous 24 Hours race was something i wanted to do that related to motoring, apart from driving/riding in Nurburgring one day, or a road trip in US, ah.. long list...

Anyway, i'm so happy to be in Le Mans with a very good friend of mine, Lucy and David that i met and host in Penang few months back. Met up with Lucy at Montparnasse Gare before taking a train to Versailles and hop on our Blablacar ride, my very first one. Not going to complain but the ride wasn't really that nice, such a small car, unstable on the highway and kinda stinky but oh well. It cost us 13€ from Versailes to Le Mans, which is quite cheap.

Once we reach Le Mans, we took a tram to LaFayette (it cost 1.50€ per ride, and there's only 2 lines in Le Mans, easy!). Im so glad to be in Le Mans to see David and Lucy again! Unbelievable to be here in France to see them again!
My first day in Le Mans is pretty exciting, meeting so many friends of Lucy and David, and prepared for the Parade. Such an awesome evening chilling out and drinking while watching the parades past by.
The next day was a little hard after so much drinking.. We head to the circuit at around 2pm (3pm is when the legendary race starts). There's thousands of people on the track, and barely able to find a good spot to watch and take some photos.
Amazing experience indeed! However, we ended up early, way before the race finish at 6.30am due to tiredness and cold. The energy is gone by then and what we want is our nice bed... Gladly, it wasn't hard to get out and one tram ride home.
The next few days is pretty relaxing... we had picnic by the river, appero with friends, BBQ, chilling, walk around the old town, visiting historical sites, shopping and cooking Asian food for my friends.. it was great! I had this question of " Why do you go to Le Mans? " when i told friends about it, especially French. The answers from them is always, " there's nothing there!" Well, you're wrong guys. I've spent an awesome 8 days in Le Mans, 8 DAYS and i enjoyed it.. and all because of the company and good times with friends! You guys are awesome, man. I wish i can come back to Le Mans one day without any doubts and see you guys again!
Oh la la

Due to the temptation to go to the famous Le Mans 24 Hours race, i've changed my plan and booked my train ticket to France. I was told by my friend, Dietmar that i could take the TGV to Paris from Kaiserslautern (which is quite near to Maikammer). So i started to check on the pricing and planned my trip on which date that i should go. Im surprised to see that it goes as low as 39€ for Kaiserslautern-Paris Est which takes about 2.5 hours. However, i managed to get mine at promo price of 69€ (normal price for 2nd class was 99€) even though it's almost doubled but for the race and France!

Dietmar was kind enough to drop me at Kaiserslautern HBF (30km from home) station instead of Neudstadt (5km from home) and showed me a nice route for motorcycling! At the station, i had some confusion about the terminal, and a local showed me how to check it when you got there. Attached is the table. Also remember to get on the right section in the terminal as TGV only stops for few minutes and you don't want to walk from the front to the middle/end of the train.

It's a double decker so check the number of your seat, it's normally on the top level. Cabin has a low level of noise, even when it hit a speed of over 300kmh. I managed to record 327kmh on my gps. Oh boy, i wish my bike is that fast! haha.. It was a nice countryside view to Paris BUT.. did i mention, the train is LATE? TGV arrived like 40 minutes late, i was like WTF? It's Europe, it's Germany, how can it be not punctual? Oh well.. there's a notice says something about police intervention and passenger transfer. Uhhh..

So all my plans and schedules are pretty much delayed for more than 40 minutes now and i'm not feeling good because i hate being late, and to top it off, a friend of mine, Laurie is waiting on the other side and she's going to wait for over an hour! Im so sorry :( Upon arrival, i had problem looking for the metro and finally found the information centre. It was 2 level down to basement and the ticket machine is located there as well. A one way trip cost you 1.80€ (to any locations on the same line) and there are many lines/tracks. Watch out and make sure you got on the correct line. I took the wrong direction and realised it after 2 stations and decided to hop off and go to the other side. Silly me! After changing my metro in Montparnasse, i've finally reach Volontaires after 20 minutes to my friend's place.
Thanks for the lunch :) After, we went for a look at the Arc De Triompe, and walk along the Champ Elysees until we reach the end, Le Lourve Museum! Cant believe I'm really here, looking at all this iconic building and structures of Paris, France.
We went to the famous Eiffel Tower or Tour Eiffel, and really.. can't believe my eyes here. It feels strange and excited at the same time, and suddenly the movie scenes pops up in my head;

From the moment from getting on the TGV - Mr Bean's Holiday where the little kids was separated from his dad and Mr Bean filming it. Ahhh!
Arc De Triompe - well i think many movie scenes were shot here, and all the famous traffic jams as showed by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May in Top Gear. LOL!
There's so much things to see in Paris, and don't listen to the advices that you only need 2 days to see Paris. NO! No way.. Please spend more time in Paris, there's so much to see and appreciate. I had to leave the very next day to catch the 24 Hours Race in Le Mans but i promised my friend and Paris to come back. I've book my TGV back to Kaiserslautern from Paris Est on the 4th of July (and yes, it's the 39€ ticket! Wohoooo) so i'm coming back and see the real Paris very soon!
Took a train from Frankfurt city - Mannheim HBF via Flix Bus (6€) and a train from Mannheim HBF to Neudstadt Wiener (6.80€). Strange isn't it when a local train is more expensive than inter city bus. Had some confusion in the train station;

Never did i knew Germany are famous, or even had wines (silly me!) but Maikammer is famous for their classic and white wines. Riesling was one of the famous one and is commonly used in a local drink called Rieslingschorle. Wineschorle in general is pretty much a mixture of wine and carbonated mineral water at a ratio of 50:50 or better, 80:20 :P The wineries here also make good Schnapps which is a strong 40% proof alcohol that warms you up in the cold evening. Maikammer is also famous for saumagen, a type of ‘sausages’ where meat and vegetables are mixed together. I’ve also tried forelle for the first time, german name for trouts and Flammkuchen (it’s not from Maikammer unfortunately.. it’s from Alsace region, French border about 30 min from here)

Bus from Penang to KL - Took Panther/Super Nice bus (Bukit Mertajam) MYR35 (8€)

KLIA Express train from KL Sentral to KLIA airport. MYR35 (8€)

Vietnam Airlines from KL to Hanoi ; 3 hours flight (and delays for an hour and havoc in the shit airport. Hanoi to Frankfurt (T2) ; 12 hours flight, arrived at 7am in the morning, waited for hours under the long queue waiting to be stamped and allowed into the country. It was a pretty easy ordeal going through the immigration and once again got quoted, your english is good. As i were preparing my documents and explain about my plans, and joked about Octoberfest, she said, i trust you and stamped! Wee.. much easier than Australia. (well the reason i mention this is because as a Malaysian, it is tough for some of us to travel and somehow, we are always in the suspicious list). The flight cost me MYR1073 (255€)

It was such a coincidence as one of my good friend, Timo is in the same airport flying to Malaysia! We talked on Facebook and set a meeting point for breakfast! It was great to see him and he showed me around and teach me how to buy a train ticket to the city. Thanks Timo!

Haubanhoft (HBF) is the term of central station in German city. It cost me 4.55€. I've booked a hotel/dorm called Smart Stay Hotel near the HBF and check-in at 2pm. Walked around for a little bit and oh man, such a bad impression. Drug addicts are everywhere here in this area, sort of a red light district! Disgusting seriously. Thankfully the staffs here are friendly and speaks English as most Germans do. Makes everything slightly easier. I've decided to roam around a little more and found the Main (river). Beautiful place and i've decided to sit down here and have some biscuits for lunch.
I booked 2 nights at Smart Stay hotel that cost me 29.80€ (8 beds dorm on the 6th floor) and a 2€ deposit for the smart card.

Didn't do much in Frankfurt apart from walking around the city, and a much further one to Bonnheim where the buildings are much nicer. Had my first german food, Currywurst for 2.70€, and some Asian foods as it's cheaper. Korean dinner (twice), Sweet Chilly Chicken Rice for 6.90€ and i found another one next day for lunch, chinese fried noodles opposite HBF for 3.90€! Super cheap for European standard.

Did spend some time along the river Main and talking to some locals who explain some building around and the amount of Museums! Well, I'm not a big fan especially when we need to pay a lot of money to get in.

So that's Frankfurt for me, i left on the 3rd day to visit Timo's dad, Dietmar about 100km down south of Frankfurt. Booked a bus from Flix Bus that cost me 6€ to Mannheim HBF, and a train to Neustadt An Der Weinstrabe for 6.80€. Had some confusion on which terminal to go and a local showed me how to check. Its on a big pieces of paper on the wall. For an easier way, download DB Navigator apps on your phone where it tells you name of every stop in case you went on the wrong train and of course, all other stuff necessary for a train ride in Germany.

Reach Neustadt An Der Weinstrabe after 1-2 hours (due to traffic jam while on Autobahn) where Dietmar picked me up! The next adventure begins in the next post!
However, i'm glad to have so many friends around the world that makes this trip possible and longer. Thank you :)

Sitting here in Starbucks waiting for my flight at 7.10pm.. there's nothing much i could do at the moment, the sky is dull and my tripod checked-in. Thought of doing time lapse but oh well..

It's a little emotional this morning leaving family and relatives for an unknown duration of time as i only bought one way ticket, never knew what could happen and where i will end up. Leaving the comfort of home and heading into uncertainty does makes me a little nervous or even scared. But i have to take this step, i've been doing nothing for the past couple of months, and my heart is not there anyway. I need a new motivation, a new inspiration and journey to refresh my mind and soul.

I would like to thanked everyone who is involved and participate in our Couchsurfing meet-ups since last May 2014. It's been awesome to be in such an active community and have alot of fun together. Thanks to all the 'farewell' party and bbq as well...

I will keep everyone updated with details in this blog, and photos of course!

So check this blog when you're free to keep up with my adventure in a brand new continent, Europe!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06318920418538168112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4152147731392835770.post-45194187200219700072015-03-04T22:12:00.000+08:002015-03-04T22:12:26.479+08:00Pulau Kapas - Kuala TerengganuHey guys,

It's been a while... sorry i've been neglecting the blog after so long.. jobs, travelling and laziness are to blamed. I've been travelling, mostly around Penang and Malaysia lately, and the most recent one was Pulau Kapas in Terengganu. Let's start afresh on this blog, with a little more motivation to update.

Gemia Island from Kapas Island

So, here it is, on my motorcycle adventure go around Peninsular Malaysia. This time, i've decided to go through a long round trip, covering almost 1800 kilometres. Here's the breakdown on the major city i've stopped.

Penang - Kuala Lumpur - Kuantan - Kuala Terengganu - Pulau Kapas - Kuala Terengganu - Jerteh - Machang - Gerik - Kulim - Butterworth

Took a nice stop at Pulau Kapas, met a friend there and had an awesome holiday for 4 days, well, i quit my job the day before i head here. Such a lovely peaceful island, since it's not the peak season yet. Many shops are still closed or renovating from the damages that monsoon caused for the past few months. To get here, take a bus from Kuala Terengganu to Marang (which is about 15-20 minutes away and cost only MYR2.50 one way). Once you got to Marang, the jetty is just 5 minutes walk away and cost us RM40 per person to get there and back.

Our first sunset on the island

Stayed in Kapas Beach Chalet or KBC for RM50 a night (double bed) with a bathroom/toilet attached. Definitely recommended to stay there! Link to their sites attached: Kappa Beach Chalets
They provides free snorkels for those who stayed there, which is awesome compared to other islands where the rental cost RM10-20 a day. That saves quite a bit of money and you can snorkels whenever you like it.

Didn't bring a tripod but such an amazing colors!

I didnt bring my camera this time since this island holiday are kinda last minute but my friend have a nice Sony RX100 and i'm really amazed by the quality of this little compact camera. Gotta say i agree, it's one of the best compact i've ever use. So here's some of the photos we took during our stays there. Really looking forward to go back there one day.
Don't you wanna visit Kapas Island?
This is the view of the beach and chalet we stayed in. There's quite a number of beaches on the island.

Due to my new job, i don't have much time for photoshoot anymore.. which is real sad! However, this time i just couldn't resist and apply leave to go to Sepang International Circuit to take some photos of Formula 1. It was the practice day on Friday, and it's FREE ENTRY! How can i resist that? haha..

First time experiencing such a fun event, for motor heads and petrol heads :P It was slightly disappointing though, because new regulation and changes to the engine spec causes some real damage on the experience.

I had good times nevertheless, shooting F1 with the pros around me and their bazooka lenses.. it just makes me more motivated and excited! Here's my first try on Formula 1! Comment and critics is certainly appreciated :)

We started off at 7.30am in front of 7-Eleven of Love Lane & Chulia St. Met Monica and Lukasc from Poland, and Alejandro from Mexico, and expecting another one but too bad, he couldn't make it. So we proceed to Chowrasta market to see the morning activities and the locals. It is a interesting place and i come here almost every weekend or two. After the visit, we head to Toh Soon Cafe at Campbell St for the famous toast and half boiled eggs. Good breakfast indeed, although it's not a very local thing :P

And as usual, the visit to Georgetown will not be completed if you don't visit and see all the street arts by Ernest Zacharevic. Unique and the use of real items such as chair, bicycles, motorcycles makes the whole art itself 3D! Look out for some of the street arts that i've shot few weeks back in the previous blog post. Next, was the Chew Jetty and Tan Jetty, which is another Unesco World Heritage Site and of course, coffee and tea as the sun getting higher and hotter! We were joined by Farah, a local CS and we head to Kapitan for lunch. Meet up with Monica & Lukasc's colleague from Intel, Vicky, Michael and Phaik Hoon.

Here's some of the dishes that we tried, cheese naan, briyani and tandoori chicken. Not the best one as the naan is a little bit dry, but the service seems to improve. Hmmm... was it because of the guest? :P After lunch, we proceed to Little India and continue our 'exploration' to Penang Road to try out the famous Cendol and Asam Laksa!

Time flies when you're having fun and not to mention, the rain that poured on us so many times throughout the day. We have to take a shelter and decided to have a coffee at Sip & Chew Cafe. Oh well, really bad coffee and long waiting time. NOT RECOMMENDED at all! Spend quite a while there waiting for rain to stop and Alex to meet us for the next part of the trip, which is the cendol and laksa! Some of us are suppose to leave earlier, but since we are having fun and the traffic jams are building up ( it was about 5.30pm).. i've decided to stay for the next event, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. It was the first day of the festival, and a parade is prepared by thousands of dedicated devotees.

We meet up at the Hainan Temple, just behind Chulia Street, gather up with some other surfers, Avi, Paulie, Sam, Cat, Ang and John before heading to Noordin Street where it all started. Rain pours again while we waiting.

I'm not very good in explaining what the festival is all about. Perhaps this LINK could help. I'll let the photos tell the whole story. Again, heavy rain hits us, but the parade goes on. This is the first time i've seen this parade and how it started. Interesting and eye opening. The rain doesn't stops anyone and the spirit is high!
Thank you so much for those who came, especially the surfers, great to meet up with new friends, had good laughs and chats.. overall, thumbs up! Hope we can do it regularly :)
Interesting idea where one can make more friends by hosting or surfing when you travels anywhere in the world. I've just joined the CS recently when i received a message from Liz about hosting her and friends in Penang.

It wasn't the best time for someone to stay at my place but i'm able to show them around Penang and try out local foods! We had some great time travelling around Penang island, and i've even tried the local transport, Rapid Penang for the first time! Hahaa.. The first day, we went to Botanical Garden, Penang National Park and Chew Jetty. Here's some photos from that day.
The next day, we decided to browse through Sunday morning market at Chowrasta. One of my favourite place to street shoot!

We walked pass a local food store, where one guy sells this local breakfast called "Mang Chang Kueh". It's made of flour, sprinkled with sugar, peanuts, canned corns and cooked to perfection under hot plate on a charcoal. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/harnsheng/9934160586/" title=""Mang Chang Kueh" by Harn Sheng, on Flickr"><img alt=""Mang Chang Kueh"" height="427" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3760/9934160586_75feb9b7cc_z.jpg" width="640" />
We walked around Georgetown, exploring and visit the street art-drawings on the old buildings by the famous artist, Ernext Zacharevic. Here's some of them.

After Georgetown, we head over to Butterfly Farm for a short visit before rushing back to town to catch the bus to KL. They almost missed the bus due to bad public transport and traffic but thankfully, managed to catch the bus on time with the help of a taxi driver.

Hope you guys enjoyed the trip and tour in Penang, and i'm looking forward to visit you guys in Cambodia one day.
Two photos that tells different story. Caption? :)
This is quite obvious i would say.. it's either he is naturally grumpy looking? Hot weather? No business-customers? You decide!
This is kinda weird or awkward in a sense, where, he is a monk or could it be, 'questionable monk' if you're looking from that couple point of view. The body language of the couple seems to be showing some contradiction. I dont know the whole story, but you tell me!
There's always something to shoot here, peoples, old buildings, bicycles and trishaws, and recently, wall painting by Ernest Zacharevic which spice up Georgetown and bring heaps of tourist from all over the world here.

I'm glad i have such a site weekly to snap some street shooting and improve myself in both composition and guts to get closer. Hahaa..

Here's some of the photos i've shot in the weekends.
Amazing trip, great fun, new friends, good food! I'm loving it and don't feel like going home! Hahaa..

For the first week, i've been to the Great Ocean Road, 12 Apostles, Philip Island, and of course, Melbourne CBD itself. Very happening city and lively. Manage to visit quite a number of locations and take some shots, so here's one taken from Yarra River.

I left Melbourne about 2 days ago, and came to Perth. Did quite a bit of shoots as well, but need some time to filter. Here's one taken tonight at Swan River, the cityscape of Perth CBD at dawn.

More to come soon when i get back home to Malaysia in about a week time. Stay tuned!

Being caught up with quite a number of things, some being good, some being complicated, that's life isn't it? Before i start mumbling.. i should head straight to point. My sis came back from her Asia tour with Ryan and bring back my new baby for me... i've sold my D700 few months ago and ordered the new Nikon D800E. Being quite busy exploring and shooting, and here's some of the first 'few' photos that came up..

Tweaking and playing with some filters (post processing) after shooting on Anzac Day 2013

and some 'review' about the camera.. It's a good camera, one of the best.. but i'm going to pin point out the things i hate mostly. Just some humble opinion, but don't get me wrong. I love the camera! I'm not particularly tech savvy person. Always on first impression, instinct and feels.. nothing too technical to talk about. Besides, dozens on great reviewer out there in the internet.

Sharpness and Moire

One thing i noticed, the sharpness is insane.. unbelievable! However, the main drawback is i think it's very susceptible to hand shake and movement. Slight movement causes blurriness. Got to keep an eye on the controls especially if you're passing to someone who's not familiar with dslr to take your photos. 8 out of 10 are subject to blurriness to a certain extend.

As for moire, i havent seen one yet... so i guess it's pretty much acceptable for me for my daily use

Full HD Movie

This is actually the reason i buy this camera.. to shoot some nice full hd video. Some say i should go for D800 instead to minimise the moire effects but heck, i don't want to regret either losing some sharpness. Gotta live with it. I've yet to shoot a lot of videos with it, nor had the experience to complain about it but so far, it's the stabilisation. Nothing can beat the Olympus OM-D EM5 hands on! Period.

Active D-Lighting

Another new tech that i couldn't get used to it or like, is the d-lighting and perhaps the new active d-lighting. I just don't like how it process in-camera to bring out the shadows or saving the highlights.. just don't quite like the results, but maybe it's just a matter of time to get used to it, or, found the right setting.

ISO performance

Nothing to be complain or praised. Quite similar to Nikon D700, but the noise seems to look better even at high iso. Personally, i wouldn't go more than ISO 3200..

Lens and Accessories

You seriously have to have some good optics for this camera to bring out the goodness. Primes being the number one choice. I don't have primes yet besides the cheap ol 50mm, nifty fifty they call it. It did perform quite well and i love it. Lens i've own that worth mentioning is probably the Nikkor 16-35 F/4. It's sharp, but distortion on full frame.. hate it. That's not the main point though.. thinking to upgrade to 14-24 F/2.8. Much brighter and better bokeh, although the distortion is pretty much unavoidable with ultra wide angle lens.

Another complain is the grip. Not as comfortable as i expect, and the battery grip is hell expensive! Gotta look out for some third party one i guess.

Ok... enough bashing the camera.. haha.. just some small little thing that bothers me sometimes but other than that, oh boy, what a great gadget. Here's some of the photos taken around Marlborough region... hope you guys like it!

Easter weekend had been great, because we are closed on Friday and Sunday. And for the first time in 10 months, i'm given a saturday day-off. It was simply the best thing ever happen because i can finally meet up with Leia and her friends and go for a short holiday.

Destination? The tip of South Island, collectively called Golden Bay. This is the 2nd time i'm visiting Golden Bay, and it's great! Lovely and peaceful place. Since my car is gone long time ago, i went back to uncle Bruce of Arrow Backpackers to rent his Toyota Estima for 3 days. Pick up the car early on friday morning and drove to Motueka for a night. Stop by quite a number of places, taking some photos with my old trusty D200 (still waiting for my new baby to come... :( )

Anyway, the trip here is to take friends around for a tour, and i do hope my 'tour guide' is worthy. hahaa.. Some hiccups along the way, like 'lost' in our supposingly short walk to Wharariki Beach ends up in Green Hill Beach. Sorry guys! :P And hopefully my driving doesn't causes too much nausea and dizzyness.. the hills of Takaka is hard to tame :)

So here's the photos from our trip at end of March. Day 1, Blenheim-Motueka Town, stop by Mapua for fish and chips again @ Smokehouse, hehe.. and mini potluck at night with Leia, Kim, Shiny, Pauline and Karl at Abel Tasman Motel.

Day 2, we start early, roughly around 7.30am and head straight to Takaka town. We visited Waikoropupu Springs around 9.30am, took some photos, short walks, and heads back to Takaka (well, it was only 10 min drive) for lunch. We walk around the town, had some crepes, while waiting for Dangerous Kitchen to open. It's pizza for $10, which is pretty cheap and tasty. After lunch, we head straight to Collingwood town, which is nearby, 30 minutes drive to check-in at Somerset Backpackers! Weeeee.. i miss Somerset's Chris and Hiromi, and Joy, the Labrador mix, and their wonderful home made breads and bush honey. Yum Yum!

There's heaps of midges flying on the water surface, and so does spiders setting webs and wait for easy meals.

We made some changes to our plan since low tide is imminent when we are there, and we could visit Wharariki Beach on that day itself. Low tide was around 5-7pm, which is perfect! We plan to take the 'short' walk around some small lakes before entering Wharariki Beach on the other side, but somehow, all of us miss the signs and end up walking further until we reach Green Hill Beach. Alamak! It was unexpected, but not too bad... at least another beach added to travel list.

First, we stop at Cape Farewell for a look out. Stunning view..

3rd Day, we decided to climb on top of Pillar Point to have a nice view of fossil point and Golden Bay
The view is stunning just like last time, but sadly, my camera was not wide enough. But it's a nice hike! Our next destination is fossil point but sadly, after just a short walk, it started to rain :( Have to cancel our plan and heads back to Motueka. Since the day is still young, we went to visit Abel Tasman National Park, and visited the Apple Split. Had quite a bit of fun there too..

We end the day with a dinner prepared by the girls. Another nice home cooked meals :) I had a great time for the past few days.. it's great, spending time with Leia and friends around Golden Bay.
Being busy, might be just an excuses, kinda neglect the blog for a little while. Laziness to be blamed :S

Euan's house, with a little patriotic touch of Malaysian flag! Thanks Euan!

After the flight with Sounds Aero, i visited another customer of mine, Euan Macdonald and his wife in Picton. They are such a wonderful and friendly couple. Our plan of the day was to have lunch at their place and then head to the Marlborough Sounds with his boat/yacht called Taranui.

So here they are, from left, Euan & Gillian MacDonald, and their neighbour.

As we leaving Waikawa Bay, we pass by a huge yacht belongs to a Russian guy who tour around the world. Rumours said, he was a Russian mafia. Hahaha..

We visited several bays around the Sounds, and this particular bay is famous for the fishes here. The fishes here are accustomed to be fed by humans, and they know when boats arrived.

After feeding the fishes, we head to Lochmara Lodge. One of the best place to hang out and have coffee or tea.

You can canoe here, swimming, all sorts of water activities here. Great for family outing!

As you walk in, there's a big green gecko greets you :P

The cafe and bar of Lochmara Lodge

The deco here is pretty creative, and i kinda like the way they recycle computer parts and turn into this!

Besides the 'gecko', there's also Indian Ringneck Parakeet who meet and greet everyone there. Cheeky little bird.

and kinda naughty too!

Besides having coffee, there's a short walks around the lodge. It cost about $8 per entry, worth it as the money goes into conservation, especially for these highly endangered Nautilus geckos.

It was a really great day out with them.. had fun, relax on the wonderful cruise around the Sounds. This is how i want to spend my day off! :)
Thanks to Craig Anderson, the managing director of Sounds Aero Maintanance, a company which managed a large fleet of planes and helicopters in the Marlborough region.

It was my day off and i managed to arrange a time to fly with Craig to get some aerial photography shots of Marlborough. Dont know much about plane but this was a 2 seater, small size plane capable of landing on almost anywhere. According to Craig, we can lift off in 25 meters, which is really amazing! We land on fields and riverbed, flying across narrow gaps, it was simply breathtaking. Im even allowed to shoot with the door open while we are flying. Cant believe i dare to do that, and not to mention, risked the camera and equipments of falling down.

Anyway, I'm still in process of editing the photos and videos shot from both Nikon D700 and Olympus OM-D E-M5 (loaned by James Luhrs of Olympus New Zealand). So here's some preview..
What a beautiful morning!

It was really cool to be here, especially when u only took 4 min from main road on the plane, compared to 4 hours tramping. Nice peaceful environment, crystal clear water, wildlife around, it was just perfect for a weekend getaway!

We need a little landing and taking off from the river.. and here's one of the shot
We are based in Penang, Malaysia and specialise in wedding videography and photography. For more info about our works and portfolio, do feel free to visit www.lightfeatherstudios.com. Most of our clients are based in Malaysia, but occasionally, we do get to shoot in Australia, & New Zealand.

Besides wedding, we also covers events such as portraiture and products in commercial photography. One of our recent job were to shoot some New Zealander kids or more commonly known as Kiwi kids. The shoot was held in one of the private school in Picton, New Zealand and here are some of the cute little kids of New Zealand, or i prefer to call them Kiwi kids :)

Most of them are pretty talented and photogenic i should say.. as kids are sometimes tricky to photograph. Some took a few try to get the smiles and expression, but some are just great and instant! Here's few more photos..
I'll fill this blog post with photos to tell the whole story :)

We went to Waikoropupu Spring, or Pupu Spring in short and Hydro Walkway the next day. It's located about 10 minutes from Takaka township. Pupu Spring is famous because it has the world's clearest water! Imagine that!

Too bad the wind are quite strong and hinder our opportunity to capture some 'see through' shots :( Anyway, we headed to Hydro Walkway to enjoy some nature walks.

There's all sorts of ferns and moss all around the walkway.. due to the high moisture content and humidity around the area, particular along the canals.

Beautiful place, but a little boring.. the only thing i found attracting is the finding of sundews!

Anyway, after few hours of jungle walks.. we are practically starving! And we gt just the right solution, Anatoki Salmon Farm is just around the corner. We drove about 20min to get there and greeted by a cute donkey on the way in.

The entrance of the salmon farm is pretty interesting, at least to me, cause I'm in the aquaculture industry all this while.

This kind of farms makes me drools, motivate and inspired me at the same time! Looking at those fishes in the water is just satisfying!

and the smells of hot smoked salmon makes me even hungrier! hahaha.. so, quickly, we grab a rod from the office and head to the fishing pond! It is so easy to fish here.. within seconds, we caught 2 huge salmon. One at 2kg and another one at 1.15kg. Lovely...

Smaller one for sashimi and bigger one, hot smoked tandoori! The price of the fresh salmon was $19 per kg, sashimi $5 labor cost, hot smoked $10 cooking cost. Cheap!

Yum yum yum! That meal makes my day! I can have these fishes every day if i live in Takaka!!
After the meal, we drove to Motueka town and check for a suitable date for sky dive. We were glad to book the very next day for our jump, as the weather forecast seems pretty good. We check in at Laughing Kiwi Backpackers for a night, $27 a night if i'm not mistaken, and free 500mb of data for internet. I thought that was sufficient until i finished it in a mere few hours. Damn! Anyway, here's some shot of the backpacker. One of the nicest i think.

and so we prepare ourself mentally for the dive that night. To think of it is pretty scary, but, exciting as well! Never really thought of doing this due to the cost, but we got a great deal and why not? Once in a lifetime...erm.. maybe more in the future XD (i gt addicted after the dive....) I'll post the sky dive photos tomorrow, once i've uploaded everything into my Flickr album.

We start our day by visiting Wharariki Beach, one of the famous beaches in New Zealand. It's not hard to find the beach, and doesn't require great fitness, or long walks. One can just drive from Collingwood town to the end Wharariki Road, and it takes about an hour only to get there. You can park you car/caravan for free in the carpark and walk another 20 minutes to the beach.

Best time of course is during the low tide. Please check and make sure the weather is good, and low tide or you'll be pretty much disappointed and wet! There's no cover during the short walk to the beach, and definitely no man-made covers either on the beach. Some small caves perhaps, but you're risking life is the tide level increase and rain does not stop. Anyway, not to scare you away, just to give some tips for a much more pleasant trip. Hehe..

Another tips, it's either wear an unwanted shoes or easier to clean shoes as there's plenty of shits along the way to the beach. It's crazy.. shit is practically everywhere... every foot you step... madness! After walking for 15 minutes, you'll see this dark-colored river. Pay some attention, as you might be lucky to see some seals swimming around. I saw 3..

It was like a barren wasteland when we first reach the sandy part of the walk. Not the typical beach that i'm expecting, but something different. Windy, sandy, and wash out.

Apparently, the nicer part of the beach was like another 30min to an hour walk and too bad, we don't have the time nor luck with the weather initially. However, it was not that bad… nice view, cool breeze and after hanging out a while.. the sun and the blue sky decided to appear once again! Perfect1

Took some photos before moving on to the next destination, Cape Farewell. The sky doesn't look that good though, with rain clouds emerging from god knows where. The weather in New Zealand changes drastically all the time. One can not have the perfect plans and got to change accordingly. We get back on the Wharariki Road, and head straight to Cape Farewell, which is about 10 minutes from the Wharariki Beach car park.

It's another short walk to the lookout from Cape Farewell car park, about 5 min i guess.. a two interesting trees greeted us at the entrance.

The lookout was pretty high, and it was an amazing sight from there. It looks so grand. However, my leg doesn't seems to feels so.. haha.. kinda scary looking down from there. I got weak knees from that! Imaging what i'm going to feel during the sky diving on coming Sunday. Oh la la…

After a while there.. it started to rain… damn… we rush back to the car. After few minutes, it seems to clear a little bit though but we decided to call it a day. Upon exiting the car park, we drove past a farmhouse, with lots of sheep gathered in the fences. There were 2 guys and few dogs chasing the sheep into smaller enclosure. We was wondering what is going on. Little lamb was separated from it's mother.. and next, we saw something unpleasant. Wait, we smell it first.. it was a burning smokey smells and we noticed the little lamb was handled one by one, the tails are dock using a burning clips or something that cuts and burn at the same time. Pardon my knowledge but it reminds me of how vet used to dock puppies tail off. The burning was actually used to seal the wound and prevent secondary infection and unnecessary blood loss. It was a very quick process, but too far for me to take a shot. Another eye opening experience!

Get back to the car with a eerie feeling and kinda distracted by the little lamb's crying… but it's agricultural and hygiene. IMO, it prevents shits from sticking on the precious wools. Something quite similar to the reason why some working dog's tails are docked. Either to prevent injuries during work or hygiene purposes, especially for those long coated dogs.

Anyway, we head back to Collingwood town to get some food for dinner as it's getting late. Surprisingly, there's little to no choices for food over there… sad.. and we decided to drive to Takaka town to get some food instead. It takes about 20 minutes to get there.. and not much choices either. Either you cooked it yourself, or fish & chips! Well, I'm a fan for good fish & chips… and i'm glad we pick the right shop.

However, it was not as straight forward as it sounds. We gotta wait for the shop to open at 4.30pm. We waited patiently around.. and finally, an Aussie guy came, open the doors and take our orders. He was a friendly guy, and his fish n chips is great! Not to mention, it's cheap too! After getting our orders, we drove back to the backpackers to enjoy the fish n chips with our grape juice from Seafried! Isn't that nice? Sitting outside under the sun, cool breeze, refreshing juice and yummy fish and chips. Great combination and great way to enjoy the evening...

Our plan was spending a week around Motueka - Golden Bay region, and the Abel Tasman National Park.

This is must be one of the early backpackers job, hanging their worn out shoes on the fences. From there, it became a tradition for most backpackers who pass by that area.. hanging more and more shoes! It was an interesting sight!

We left Blenheim on Tuesday morning… and our first stop was Nelson. Our initial plan was to stay a night in Nelson, but it's boring here.. besides, we came here before, and nothing much to do. Had our lunch in Nelson Oriental Restaurant, which is just so so... dont really recommend anyone to go there.

So, after some shopping at Kathmandu and lunch, we head straight to a small town called Collingwood, near the Farewell Spit of the Golden Bay. This old man from the construction site was pretty happy to be taken photo.

Halfway through, we stop by at Seafried Winery and Cellar Door, the first winery we've visited in NZ, and here we are again…. for the grape juice, not wine! LOL… at $5 a bottle, it's a nice juice! Don't blame me… i'm not a big fans of white wine here and the red is just so so… As we were wine tasting, i went on to sign the visitor book and guess what, it's either nobody (i mean, few..) visited them or those visitors just not interested to leave some comments. My 2nd signature and comments is still on the very same page. Hahaha.. after 4 months, still same page, what a pity!

So after the wine tasting and bought 6 bottles of grape juice, we continue our journey...We pass through Motueka town, and the hilly road started. It was pretty crazy and winding.. corners here and there non stop. Some are pretty tight. How i wish I'm here with a motorbike. Cornering heaven! LOL

We have to drive up the Takaka hill before going down to the town itself. A pretty amazing sight i would say… simply breathtaking!!

We stop at Takaka town while looking for the address and vacancy of backpackers. The first choice was The Innlet, as recommended by some friends. However, to our disappointment, and answering machine took our call… saying… they are still closed for the winter! WTF!!! No choice but to look around the BBH booklet for the next backpacker. We chose Somerset Backpacker in Collingwood, as it got pretty good rating, free breakfast and near to Farewell Spit. It was a good decision. The owner, an englishman, Chris and japanese wife, Hiromi greeted us with warm welcome. Both of them are so friendly, and the place was homey. Nobody stay there but us, all 5 of us! That is cool! According to them, the season just about to start, and they just reopen for 2 weeks. Cool! We're in luck!

It was already evening when we reach there, so we decided to get some rest for the next day.

It was not a lovely morning the very next day. We were greeted by light rain and clouds! Deng! But the free breakfast was yummy! Homemade bread and local bush honey is just so tasty. Cant stop eating slice after slice. Coupled with a cup of hot coffee, it made my day a lot nicer! Hehe..

Joy, greeted us in the morning with his soulful eyes.. begging for foods but we are not allowed to! He is one of the clever and obedient dog! The owner show us, that without his permission, Joy wouldnt eat the dog biscuit right in front of him. That's a cool trick! She was saying... No... No... No.... then Yes, there goes the greedy Joy.

The two girls were afraid of Joy, but Joy mean no harm! He's just too cute! haha.. Sitting there watching the two girls as he patiently waiting for some foods. Sorry Joy, we cant do that! You're obese!

As the rain begins to slowed down, we start preparing and head to Farewell Spit. Chris and Hiromi was kind enough to show us what's nice to visit around there with an informative piece of yellow map and places of interest. Our plan was to visit Wharariki Beach, Cape Farewell and Pillar Point. Wharariki Beach, rated one of the most beautiful beaches around New Zealand, was indeed amazing! There's one thing to keep in mind though, make sure to visit only during low tides. That's the only way you could maximise the beach exploration.

I'll update the blog with Day 3 and Day 4 photos pretty soon, it takes a little bit of time as our internet connection in the backpackers is so unstable and slow! Haizzz.....

Hah! Then the idea of sunrise shooting came up by a friend, and so we plan ahead. Destination? Wither Hill Farm Park. Pretty near, plus, we need to get up pretty early.

We woke up around 5am in the morning, get some breakfast before heading there and start climbing around 5.30am. Man, it was freezing cold.. the wind was terribly strong and cold, to a point where my hand almost frozen! No way i could hold my tripod longer than 30 seconds.. it's just too cold! Anyway, we managed to hike up against the elevation and coldness, reach the top of Mount Vernon to see the sun just about to rise. Set up my tripod, and shot a few photos.. here's my pick:

Using Cokin GND filter, and merge two photos to get the sky exposed to my liking.

Is this considered HDR? hmmmm...Anyway,
looking at the sky, we saw a dark patch of cloud from the south rising and getting nearer and nearer. We decided to get down the hill quickly. On the way down, i stumble across some nice background-foreground and lines. Hard to explain, so let the photo do the justice.

Do feel free to comment and give me some inputs! I deeply appreciated it and it motivates me a lot especially when i saw the post counts rising each day. Thank you so much to those who are supporting my blog.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06318920418538168112noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4152147731392835770.post-34224725353430988252012-09-29T04:16:00.001+08:002012-09-29T04:16:11.968+08:00Changes, An Unavoidable ProcessIt's Spring! Time flies so fast, and i'm here in New Zealand for 4 months already. Spent my first month in the vineyard, working with a company called Vincon. Enjoyed pruning and stripping, even though it's one of the toughest job ever. However, fresh air and freedom is something i like the most. Being close to nature..

However, i was considered lucky to found another job.. a more stable and permanent job in Blenheim, New Zealand. Working as a salesperson, or much nicer term, imaging specialist of Harvey Norman Blenheim. Haha.. Blink of an eye, it's already 3 months working there. Enjoyed working there, as plenty of opportunity to earn extra income from commission. All the colleague and boss, Donna are very kind, friendly and helpful! I've decided to apply for work visa because i wanted to stay longer in New Zealand to visit more places and take more photos. Fingers crossed, i hope i will be able to get my visa soon!

However, the whole 4 months was not without any bad news.. although i make a lot of friends, it's sad to see everyone left.. one by one left the backpackers after the seasonal work ends. It's real sad.. The kitchen was never the same again without all our noises and laughters.. it was a quiet and somehow, sad places from time to time. New friends comes and goes though.. that's life i guess, especially for a backpacker and traveller like me. Fall sick too, few weeks back during the starts of spring. Feels really bad and home sicks at times.

Anyway, i guess enough for today, before my readers starts to get bored.. :P
Spiced up abit, thanks to all who have been supporting me in photography throughout the years, my photo have been published again in Digital Camera Malaysia magazine. Although it's not a prize winning shot, it motivates me to work harder, to improve my photography and hopefully, make a name for myself.

Here's a snapshot of the magazine:

As spring emerges, flowers starts to bloom.. did manage to capture some while trying to redo my DIY flash diffuser for macro photography.

Also managed to take a photo of sakura blossom on Budge St. It was a beautiful sight!!

Btw, went to another winery for wine tasting again.. this time, Cloudy Bay! A nice place to visit, although i dont feel so comfortable in the cellar door. The host were not overall very friendly, but maybe it's just me being overly sensitive. So far, the best cellar door i've been is still Clos Henri :)
The primary objective of the roadshow was basically showcase all the Olympus range, and of course, the ultimate OM-D E-M5! The roadshow was held at the Te Papa Museum, and attend by over 50 invited guess. Great food and drinks served!
I stayed in a wonderful hotel called Distinction Century City Hotel's Suite Room (which is booked by Olympus, but not paid, duhh.. i have to fork up $159 for a night and still waiting for reimbursement) But anyway, the room was superb. Have a look!

Im quite impress by the new technology of the EM5, especially the 5 axis Image Stabilization ( world first!) and the weatherproof sealing ( demonstrated there too by pouring glass of water over it!). The mirrorless camera is compact and solid-magnesium alloy body. Image quality are comparable, if not, better than most APSC Dslr. I'll tested it out in the coming days to see how it performs. Another thing is like was the EVF, which is superb! The bracketing mode is superb too, especially the Art Filter bracketing. However, during writing; especially when you're shooting 11 art filter bracketing, you cant possible view other photos while waiting for it to finish writing.. slow.... real slow...

There is some drawback, especially the small size (which doesn't fit my hand well) and with the added grip, actually make it worse cause it obstruct my 5th finger. Another comment was, the LCD color tinge. Im quite sensitive to colors, especially on the LCD. From my observation, most Samsung phones had that problem. And now, the EM5, which is dissapointing. If you don't know what i mean, try look at the EM5 LCD and then the Electronic View Finder. Look at the green/yellow tinge on the LCD! Total disappointment i should say..

Anyway, overall, the camera is real good in terms of build quality and image quality. Nothing to complain (until i finish playing with it for few more days) Will update soon on that!
